Honey Benefits

Find out why Grandma’s loves honey.

Honey? What is it?

Honey is a thick golden substance that is sweet to taste. 100% real honey is made mostly of natural sugars, water, a minuscule amount of protein and a whole variety of vitamins and minerals that are important for our health.

How is it made?

Honey is made by one of Grandma’s favourite pollinators, the honeybee. Honeybees fly around and gather nectar from flowers, this nectar is then processed by the bees and deposited into honeycomb. Bees spend endless amounts of time producing this food reserve for when times are scarce. But don’t worry our bee farmers make sure the honeybees never go hungry.

Why is it important to know where your honey comes from?

Currently, many honey products found in our grocery stores are imported. North America has strict regulation about what is considered honey, but unfortunately most imported honey is not checked for its quality.

Imported honey can easily contain added water, sugars and lack much of the natural properties that provide the health benefits of real honey. This is why it is important to support local, quality, and 100 % real honey. Grandma’s also believes in supporting our local businesses as we create a proud Canadian product

Grandma's Honey Health

Antioxidants and Natural Enzymes

Real honey is filled with antioxidants and natural enzymes. Antioxidants can help counteract disease-causing free radicals that can disrupt the normal process of your body cells.  Natural enzymes also play an important role in maintaining the normal function of our body cells.

Antibacterial, Antifungal and Antiviral

Its known that ancient Egyptians used honey as a salve to put on their wounds to help with healing. Turns out they were onto something, modern research has shown that 100% real honey can kill unwanted bacteria, fungus and a few types of viruses. Honey’s ability to fend off these nasty invaders has to do with its slightly acidic pH and its low levels of hydrogen peroxide (an antiseptic). This means that taking honey can also help protect against indigestion caused by harmful bacteria.

Natural Cough and Sore Throat Relief

Studies have shown that honey can be just as effective as over the counter cough suppressant medication. It has also shown to soothe sore throats and therefore makes it a great natural remedy to help with cold symptoms.

Prebiotic

Have you heard about the bacteria in your stomach? No need to panic, this is good bacteria, and they are very important to our health and digestion. The good bacteria want to help our stomachs digest, so we want to keep them happy. Honey has been shown to be a great source of nourishment for the good bacteria in your gut.

Anti-inflammatory

Chronic or uncontrolled inflammation has been linked to numerous diseases including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and even depression. Lucky for you, research has shown that honey has anti-inflammatory effects.

Healthier Alternative to Regular Sugars

Honey is made up of natural sugars and all sugars should be consumed in moderation. However, research has shown that swapping honey out for your regular table sugar can improve several factors related to heart health.
